Mr. Fred Brouns obtained a PhD in Nutritional Physiology at the Maastricht University in the Netherlands on the Topic “Food and Fluid Related Aspects in Highly Trained athletes” For this work, which included aspects of hydration, metabolism, energy and physical performance, he was awarded with the Dutch Sports Medicine Award

He has >25 years experience in the field of life sciences and health nutrition and headed R&D functions at Wander Dietetics, Sandoz Nutrition, Novartis Nutrition, Eridania Beghin Say, Cerestar and Cargill. Additionally he fulfilled positions at the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Europe as chair of the Carbohydrates Committee and Pilot of various expert panels. At IDACE, Paris, he chaired the expert panels infant nutrition; sports nutrition; functional foods and Food Supplements. He obtained fellowships of the American College of Sports Medicine and the European College of Sports Sciences and is an invited member of the British Nutrition Society. He was consultant of the IOC, various NOC’s, the Dutch Football team and guided worldclass sportsmen and women. He is a registered Biomedical Researcher and Board member of the Dutch Academy of Food Science. He has published extensively and is a global speaker in the field of Life Sciences and Nutrition. Today he holds a chair in Health Food Innovation at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life and Sciences within the research school NUTRIM (Nutrition, toxicology and metabolism Research Institute Maastricht) of Maastricht University. His current research interests are especially related to health and application aspects of sugars, sweeteners, dietary fibers, pre-biotics and functional food ingredients in food and drink. He is Program director of the international MSc program “Health Food Innovation Management”

Ms. Claire Nuttall has over 20 years experience working in the world of brands, helping brands inspire and realise real innovation success.  She started out her career in France within RSCG, she then spent 6 years at Grey Matter as  Head of Creative Strategy, 12 years as a Partner and Head of Consumer Brands at Dragon Rouge and has now been with 1HQ for almost 2 years as a Partner and Director of Insight & Innovation. She is an inspiring and fresh thinker who has driven major game changing Strategy, Insight and Innovation for clients including Nestle, Kerry Foods, Unilever, GSK, Carlsberg, Premier Foods, Bacardi, Twinings, ABF, Sainsburys, Burtons Foods, Campina, amongst many others. She has also led pioneering health projects around the future of food and how brands can best develop to appeal to new and emerging audiences. She has worked with societal and attitudinal trends in food and drinks and health for over 10 years and regularly contributes to conferences and thought pieces on opportunities for brand growth.  Claire loves nothing more than breakthrough new approaches and then applying the thinking to brands, determining how they can create and develop category changing famous brands for the future.

   
Mr. John Reilly has 28 years experience working in the food, and food ingredients sector. He began his career in R&D, focusing on the FMCG sector, before moving into a commercial and business development role in the dairy ingredients sector. He is currently the Technology Business Director of Proteins at Kerry Ingredients and Flavours.
   

Mr. Luc van Loon is a Professor of Physiology of Exercise and Head of the M3-research unit at the Department of Human Movement Sciences at Maastricht University Medical Centre. He has an international research standing in the area of skeletal muscle metabolism. Current research in his laboratory focuses on the skeletal muscle adaptive response to exercise, and the impact of nutritional and pharmacological interventions to modulate muscle metabolism in health and disease. The main research interests of his laboratory include exercise metabolism, sports nutrition, adaptation to endurance and resistance type exercise, and the use of physical activity and/or dietary interventions to improve health in chronic metabolic disease (aging and type 2 diabetes). The latter are investigated on a whole-body, tissue, and cellular level, with skeletal muscle as the main tissue of interest. He has authored more than 100 original, peer-reviewed research and review articles. He is member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism (IJSNEM) and the European Journal of Sport Science (EJSS). He is a member of the Scientific Board of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS) and the Benelux Association for Stabile Isotope Scientists (BASIS). To support the use of stable isotopes in biomedical research, he is also scientific coordinator of the Stable Isotope Research Center (SIRC) at the Academic Hospital in Maastricht and coordinator of the Human Performance Laboratory at the Department of Human Movement Sciences.

   
Mr. Steffen Oesser studied biology and chemistry at the University of Kiel in Germany. As a Scientific Assistant at the Institute for Physiology of the University of Kiel, he initially concentrated on the areas of cell physiology and protein chemistry. Since 1993, He has been active in medical research at the Hospital for General and Thoratic Surgery at the Kiel campus of the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He is principally involved in researching the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis and the development of new therapy possibilities for the treatment of degenerative disease of joint cartilage. Since October 2003, Dr Oesser is Director of the Collagen Research Institute (CRI) in Kiel, Germany.
   
  Mr. Stefan Siebrecht, Consultant Health Ingredient (Germany)
   
Ms. Andrea Wirth graduated in 1996 in sociology and business  administration at the university of Mannheim, Germany. She has long term experience in international market research and product management in the R&D sector of consumer goods. The focus of her expertise are consumer driven product development, target group selection and exploration as well as the in-depth investigation of consumer needs, desires and expectations. Furthermore she is expert in branding and brand directed product strategy. She is currently Senior Research Manager at IfZ - Institut für Zielgruppenkommunikation in Heidelberg where she is head of international qualitative consumer insights.
   

Ms. Elena Groothuizen is an analyst with Innova Market Insights. She is widely respected in the fields of food and beverage innovation. An honours graduate in economics, she works with clients around the world to discover trends and insights in food and beverage innovation. She is a regular speaker at technical seminars and marketing events across Europe. Product launch analysis is a favourite research topic for her.

 

   

Mr. Péter Szabolcs is a scientist and clinical trial manager at DSM Nutritional Products in Switzerland. He obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. degree in health sciences at Semmelweis University, Budapest. After working at National Institute for Food and Nutrition Science in Hungary and finishing a postdoctoral fellowship in South Africa he was employed at Gedeon Richter Plc. in innovative clinical drug development. At DSM he is responsible for planning, management, evaluation and medical/scientific support of clinical trials with various nutritional supplements.

   

Ms. Christine Brombach holds a Master’s degree and PhD in nutrition and home economics form University of Giessen, Germany. She earned a Master’s degree from Kansas State University Manhattan, Kansas, USA in nutrition and gerontology. At the University of Giessen, she worked in various European research projects on eating behaviour in everyday life situation and food behaviour of various ages groups.

For four years Christine Brombach was project coordinator of the German National Nutrition Survey II at the Max Rubner Institute, Karlsruhe, Germany. Since 2007 Christine Brombach is lecturer and researcher at the Institute for Food and beverage Innovation, Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Waedenswil, Switzerland. She is teaching and doing research in the area of consumer and eating behaviour, nutrition in the elderly, nutrition intake and dietary assessment methods.

   
Mr. Willem van Zeben
   
Ms. Nicole de Roos, PhD is a registered nutritionist who has been working in the field of evidence-based nutrition since obtaining a PhD in human nutrition in 2001. From 2001 to 2008, she worked as a nutrition research coordinator at UMC Utrecht, and performed studies in the field of energy needs and body composition. Since 2008, she has been working as an assistant professor at the division of Human Nutrition of Wageningen University. In this position, she lectures in clinical nutrition, nutrition behaviour, methodology, and scientific reading and writing. Besides that, she coordinates and performs research projects in the field of clinical nutrition for the Nutrition Alliance Gelderse Vallei, a collaboration between Wageningen University and hospital Gelderse Vallei in Ede. She is a member of the Stuurgroep Ondervoeding and of the scientific advisory board for the Dutch Dietetics journal.  
   
Ms. Menrike Menkveld-Beukers graduated in 1995 in Human Nutrition at the University of Agriculture Wageningen. After graduating she coordinated a nutrition training programme for Indonesian health care professionals. She then moved to ILSI (International Life Sciences Institute) Europe as a staff scientist. In February 2000 she started working for Friesland Nutrition (now FrieslandCampina). She started as product manager for Infant and Follow On Formulae. As Manager Medical Marketing and Sales she was responsible for the strategy and activities in the Dutch health care market. In 2006 she joined Friesland Foods Western Europe Business Development and worked in nutrition and science communication. As of 2009 she is the coordinator of the Nutrition Alliance Gelderse Vallei (www.alliantievoeding.nl). This is a joint initiative of the Gelderse Vallei Hospital in Ede and the Human Nutrition Division of Wageningen University. The Nutrition Alliance was launched in 2007 and builts an integral role for nutrition in health care: (1) cross boundary nutrition care paths, (2) nutrition research in a (pre) clinical setting, and (3) implementing the Nutrition Hospital.
   

Mr. Kip Underwood is Solae Europe, Senior Director of Sales & Marketing EMEA and has over 18 years experience in food ingredient manufacturing, supply chain, research & development, sales, marketing experience. He began his career with Ralston Purina Company’s Protein Division, a legacy company of Solae, LLC. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from University of Missouri-Columbia and a M.B.A, with an international emphasis from Saint Louis University. He is based in Geneva, Switzerland since the beginning of 2011.

   
  Ms. Marie-Helene Saniez obtained a Master's Degree in Biochemistry at the University of Science and Technics of Lille, France in 1979. She concluded her education with a Postgraduate degree in food microbiology at Pasteur Institute Lille. She acquired tools such as molecular biology and microbiology at Paul Sabatier University (Professor TIRABY, Toulouse). She completed her studies in microbiology at MIT (Professor SYNSKEY, Boston) researching the production of new metabolites. She was granted a licence to experiment on animals (Maisons Alfort) in 2000. She has been employed by ROQUETTE in 1979 as a Microbiologist and Scientist, to develop microbial strains from laboratory to industrial scale for biotechnological processes. She has been specifically involved in enzyme production, organic acid production, polyol production, methane production and corn steeping. Her role was expanded in the field of biological control including micro-organisms, endotoxins and GMO considering and incorporating various quality standards. Her responsibilities were increased to include Nutrition and Toxicology (1999). She has undertaken animal studies and clinical studies on novel ingredients which have in turn contributed to the development of a new family of fibers , carbohydrates in gut health, weight management satiety and glycemic response., the development of polyols in oral care.

She was in charge of innovation in Nutrition from 2007 to 2009. She managed a program in Nutrition and Health called NUTRAHUB specifically focused on products issued from pea and microalgae. ALGOHUB program was launched in 2008 with 14 partners thanks to the French agency OSEO.

She currently holds the post of Nutrition Director at the corporate level.

   
Mrs. Cathy Signoret graduated from the Technology University of Compiegne (France) in 1998. She has five years experience in the field of animal nutrition at Inzo°, branch of Union InVivo, Europe’s leading agricultural supplies buying consortium. In 2003, she joined Cosucra Groupe Warcoing, producer of chicory inulin and pea protein, where she is responsible for Regulatory & Nutritional Support for the whole ranges of ingredients.
   
Ms. Frauke Warrikoff  is a German national. She holds a Master Degree in Food Science from the University of Giessen, Germany. She joined Lonza in 2009 and is responsible for the Marketing & Sales of Lonza’s nutrition portfolio in selected markets and some global key accounts. Before joining Lonza Frauke has been working for Evonik Degussa GmbH and DKSH GmbH.
   
Mr. Christophe Ripoll Doctor of Life Science from the University Pierre et Marie CURIE (Paris VI) and MSc in Plant biology and biotechnology, Christophe Ripoll is a specialist in functional foods and nutraceuticals. His main research work at Rutgers University, USA and at Phytomedics was focused on screening and characterization of vegetables crop for their Nutrition & Health valorization, project which had led to the development of PMI 005, a chicory patented extract. He has also participated to the ICBG international program funded by the NIH focusing on Central Asia biodiversity, where he set up a screening platform to identify new botanical candidates. Moreover, he worked for several years for Vilmorin Cie on vegetable R&D project. He is the authors of several peer-reviewed publications, patents, regulatory and scientific communications. At NATURALPHA since 2005, he is currently the Executive Vice-President R&D and CSO. He manages the activities of Consulting and Labs departments and coordinates the internal and external research and consultancy projects in Nutrition & Health.
   

Mr. Alvin Ibarra MSc, PhD, Strategic Research Programs Manager at NATUREX, is a Food Scientist with broad experience in the Nutraceutical and Functional Foods Industry. He is the author of several scientific publications and patents related to functional ingredients. Nowadays, he is the coordinator of the Spanish SENIFOOD project, an initiative aimed at designing specific foods for older people in order to maintain balanced nutrition in this sector of the population.

   
Mr. Doede Binnema, after studying biochemisty at the University of Groningen and working on his PhD thesis on the intrinsic system of fibrinolysis at TNO Leiden he had a post-doc position in the Intistute of Immunology of the Erasmus University. In 1990 he became head of the department of biochemistry of the Netherlands Insitute for Carbohydrate Research TNO. In the period 1998-2008 he was project manager Agrobiokon and location manager of TNO Food&Nutrition location Groningen. At the moment he holds a position aslector Functional Ingredients & Health at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, in addition to this he is theme coordinator Carbohydrates&Health in the Carcbohydrate Competence Center and Program manager Food&Nutrition of the Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands.   
   

Mr. Jens Bleiel is a business economist by training. He started his career at a management consultant company in Germany in the business segments of strategy, organization and personnel. After 5 years, he joined Dutch company Numico and held several management and executive functions in the baby food branch of the company (Milupa,Cow&Gate, Nutricia amongst other brands). His assignments brought him to Argentina, Germany and the Netherlands. His last function was Global Marketing Director Infant Milks. After 10 years in the business, he joined Dutch multinational DSM, world market leader in vitamins and other food ingredients. As Senior Vice President Metabolic Health Products, he built up the functional food business in the area of metabolic health products. On August 17, 2009, he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Food for Health Ireland and moved over to Ireland.

   
Ms. Cathy Eccles is Programme Officer at the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission. Currently working in the Biotechnologies, Agriculture and Food Directorate, she looks after a range of research projects in the Food, Health and Well-being sector. Based in Brussels, she has been with the Directorate General for Research and Innovation since 1994. She previous worked as Legal Officer and Programme Officer in the Environment Directorate. Prior to joining the Commission, Cathy spent 11 years working in marketing, research and development roles within the petrochemical industry.
   
Ms. Marian van Bokhorst - de van der Schueren is a senior research nutritionist at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam. She registered as a dietitian in 1986. Se worked as a clinical dietitian at the Dutch Cancer Institute Antoni van Leeuwenhoekziekenhuis, at the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis and then at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam. She started her PhD studies in 1994 and obtained a PhD on “Malnutrition in head and neck cancer patients” in 2000. She became head of the department of nutrition and dietetics in 2001 and has successfully contributed  to the  prosperous development of the department of nutrition and dietetics of the VUmc by establishing research lines and introducing evidence based practice into patient care. From 2010, she devotes her work to research only. Her fields of interest are: malnutrition, nutritional screening and assessment, geriatrics and cancer. She is a board member of several national and international committees, e.g. the Dutch Malnutrition Steering Group, the Dutch Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism and the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. She participates in several advisory groups, for example for the Dutch Dietetic Association and the Health Council of the Netherlands.
   

Mr. Jens Kondrup Medical doctor, University of Copenhagen, 1974. Doctor of medical science 1983. Specialist in hepatology 1991.

Positions held: Science positions at Department of Biochemistry, University of Copenhagen &.Department of Cell Biology, Rockefeller University, New York. Clinical training at Rigshospitalet, University hospital, Copenhagen. Professor in Clinical Nutrition at Department of Human Nutrition, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Senior consultant, head of Clinical Nutrition Unit, Rigs­hospitalet.

Administrative experience: Founder/Chairman of the Danish Society for Clinical Nutrition. General Secretary for European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). Chairman of Nutrition Committee of Copenhagen Hospital Corporation. Publications: 81 papers in PubMed. Eleven of these are reviews. H index = 24 (ISI Web of Knowledge January 2011). Topics: metabolism of lipids, alcohol, amino acids, protein, acute liver failure, screening for nutritional risk, implementation of nutrition care in hospitals.

 

Ms. Karin Lieshout (Managing Director SKIM) is one of the two founding partners of SKIM, a dynamic and rapidly growing market research agency with offices in Europe and the Americas. Mr. Benoît Gouhier (Senior Project Manager Consumer Health SKIM) is the moving force behind SKIM’s Consumer Health team, providing advanced market research solutions for medical nutrition, functional foods, OTC drugs and cosmeceuticals. With a passion for market research and an international mindset, Benoit has built extensive knowledge in the healthy nutrition business over the past 5 years. His areas of expertise lie in the field of product communication, new product development and pricing research. He holds a Master in Food Science from the Ecole Supérieure d’Agriculture et d’Agroalimentaire d’Angers in France. He is currently based in SKIM’s head quarter office in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). Ms. Yvette Luiking is a Senior Scientist at Danone Research – Centre for Specialised Nutrition, and teamleader on Muscle & Protein Metabolism within the Medical Nutrition Division. The products from the Medical Division are branded under the name Nutricia. In her current position she is responsible for the science behind, the design and the substantiation of innovative product concepts and strategies with functional benefits for older people and diseased. She started her career within the company in 2006 as concept designer for the Medical division, after 5 years of Post-doc research on clinical nutrition and protein metabolism at the Maastricht University and University Hospital, with a main focus on ICU patients. She has a PhD in gut physiology and an MSc in Human Nutrition.
   

Mrs. Ria van der Maas graduated in 1989 in Human Nutrition at the University of Agriculture Wageningen with a second major in Marketing and Market Research. After graduating she worked as a market researcher for the agricultural market at NSS Market Research. She then moved on to KNMI (The Dutch Weather Institute) as a marketing manager for the liberation of their commercial activities. As of 1998 Ria has worked for Unilever. She started as consumer understanding manager for the markets of bakery products and consumer overweight respectively. As Sr. Nutrition & Health Manager she is currently responsible for the nutrition strategy for the foodservice business to bring healthier options closer to out of home eating.
